The worlds first intelligent Agent seen as a major breakthrought in the commercial application of neural network technology is now available for download . The software which scours the Internet bringing back customised information for the user heralds a new way in which information can be searched on the Internet.

AutoNomy Agents think and act for themselves, freeing the user from the time consuming business of finding and sifting information on the Internet. Agentware can be applied to a number of different tasks, and is designed to be used by almost anyone with a PC and an Internet connection. The first application of the technology, for the World Wide Web, is being made available today for a free trial by Internet users.

AutoNomy Agents are designed to be easy to use and require no prior technical knowledge. The user briefs the Agent with information about a subject area in plain English and can then send it out onto the Web to find and evaluate new material from the millions of documents available. Agents find their way around in the same way that human cyber-explorers do, following references and using search engines - as well as following new lines of inquiry and trying different angles.

An Agent can be recalled at any time to be re-trained on the information which it has found - making for more in-depth, accurate research. An Agent's owner does not even need to be connected to the Internet while it is working for them. They will be able to send the Agent to a staging post known as a Kennel. Pre-trained Agents can also be used to accelerate the process. Internet users will also be able to download or purchase pre-trained Agents with a library of information on popular subjects already to hand.

Further applications of the Agentware technology for release in the near future will include:

• Press Agent, which will collect and compile a personalised newspaper for its owner every day from the dozens of news sites available on the Net. The Press Agent is included in the free trial version of Agentware.
• Mail Agent, which collects, sorts and prioritises email according to the Agent's training

• Guardian Agent, which prevents obscene or violent material from reaching the user's computer - not just by looking for tell-tale words on the page, but by looking at the whole piece

An enhanced version of the Agentware software goes on sale in October priced at £49.99. It will offer unlimited numbers of Agents, and will not be limited to a 30 day life span. It will also come with a number of pre-trained expert agents in a number of common subjects. Agentware Pro, which will include the Mail Agent and Press Agent as well as the enhanced Web Agent, will also be available later this year, priced at £79.99. Kennel Services will be provided by AutoNomy itself, or by Internet Service Providers (who provide Internet users with their connection to the Internet), for a small monthly fee.
